Living in Istanbul - Why Did I Come Here?
I’ve never been on a rollercoaster ride but allow me to say, living here has been one hell of a rollercoaster ride! I don’t really know whether they’re called that because they have ups and downs or because they’re exciting as hell. In my case, it definitely was the latter. I arrived here on the 29th of June -around 9 months ago- and I have been going down the rollercoaster at top speed ever since.
I spent a wonderful summer exploring the city, I then enrolled in an Austrian high school where I finally put more effort into my studies, I met many new great friends there, improved my Turkish and finally, just recently got accepted by a university I’ve been really wishing to go to. I now finally have a vision for my future. This year, I learned a lot about myself, about my interests, about who I want to be, and about what I want to do in life.
The most frequent question I get asked is why I wanted to come here in the first place. What do I know, or as the Turks say: "Ne bilim, ya?". I'm here to enjoy it. But no, I need to give smart, well-constructed, and thought-through answers. So... Why did I move here?
Honestly, I really don't know how to answer that question. You see, living here has made me really happy. But I can't quite give a proper reply to people who ask me why I love this city. I tend to resort to saying that life here simply is more.... well, simple. The people are friendlier, more talkative, more generous, and more likely to help. Not that all that isn't true or anything, but it really isn't the full story. That's just something that bugs me.
Maybe with time, I'll realize why I love this city so much but for now, that will have to suffice. Ultimately, I just think I was able to find myself here. I was able to learn so much about who I am and who I want to be. Now, I'm off to work on becoming that person.
